Two Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet aircraft have destroyed Boko Haram’s logistics base in Sambisa forest, Borno state.

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole raided Sambisa forest after series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions carried out on the logistics base revealed a resurgence of human and vehicular activities at the location, which had hitherto been abandoned.

The Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said yesterday in Abuja that the operation was carried out on Monday.

“The ATF scrambled two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft to attack the location.

“Overhead the target area, several structures and vehicles were seen camouflaged under the thick vegetation of the Forest, with significant human activity observed within the area.

“The attack aircraft recorded direct hits on the target area resulting in the destruction of several structures and neutralisation of some Boko Haram Terrorists.

“Some of the terrorists who survived the bomb strikes were seen fleeing the area. They were mopped-up in follow-on attacks,” Daramola said.

Previously over the weekend, five crew members of the Mi-35M helicopter that crashed this year in Damasak, Borno State on January 2 while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion were honoured by the NAF on Saturday, January 26, 2019.

They are; Late Flight Lieutenants Pereowei Jacob (Captain) and Kaltho Paul Kilyos (Co-pilot), Sergeant Auwal Ibrahim (Flight Technician), Lance Corporal Adamu Nura (Gunner) and Aircraftman Meshack Ishmael (Gunner).

The deceased crew members were honoured alongside, the Late Squadron Leader Mohammed Bello Baba-Ari, a fighter Instructor Pilot who died during rehearsals for aerial display for Nigeria’s 58th Independence Celebration, as well as 13 other deserving NAF personnel and civilians who had distinguished themselves in their areas of responsibilities in 2018.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, represented by the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, commended the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for his foresight and for encouraging excellence by ensuring that those who have contributed to the success of the NAF are recognized and rewarded.

In his remarks, the CAS stated that the occasion was meant to celebrate personnel who showed courage in the face of terror and exhibited strength where others saw fear; personnel who applied ingenuity where others perceived impossibility.

He emphasized that the operational successes achieved particularly in the outgone year, 2018, would not have been possible without the dogged determination, commitment and sacrifices made by officers and airmen/airwomen of the Service.
