Politicians Stockpiling Firearms For Elections – IGP Adamu

The Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu has expressed fears over reports that politicians were stockpiling firearms for the forthcoming elections.

Adamu disclosed that some political actors were bent on disrupting the electoral process, occasioned by the increasing level of political intolerance and inter-party rivalry.

The IGP made the remarks at a one-day meeting with the Deputy Commissioners of Police in-charge of operations on January 29, 2019, in Abuja.

The meeting followed a similar one held barely a week ago with the Assistant Inspectors General of Police in all the 12 Police Zonal Headquarters and Commissioners of Police across the 36 State Commands and the FCT to perfect our plans towards the forthcoming general elections.

Adamu stated that the Nigeria Police Force has been engaging strategic stakeholders towards defining new pathways that will ensure quality security service delivery by the Police as well as guarantee a credible, peaceful and transparent electoral outcome.

He said the NPF will be partnering with National Security Adviser, Independent National Electoral Commission, Traditional Rulers, Nigeria Civil Society Election Situation Room and delegations comprising of Ambassadors of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the European Union among others.

He warned politicians to desist from hate speeches capable of igniting the country, adding that the NPF will not hesitate to apprehend and prosecute any politician who violate electoral laws no matter how highly placed.

“We, however, remain genuinely concerned about the disposition of some ill-advised political actors who appear bent on threatening our democratic values and our national security all in their desperation to project their narrow political interests over and above national interests,” said Adamu.

“Equally worrisome are reports of firearms build-up by some political actors and threats in some other quarters to disrupt the electoral process.

“We also note an increasing level of political intolerance which has been occasioning pockets of inter-party violence destruction of campaign billboards across the country. All of these constitutes not only serious electoral or criminal infractions, but major national security threats.”

Adamu added that the NPF will not relent in ensuring internal peace before, during and after the elections, even as he enjoined all political actors to play by the rules.
